Nongpoh, June 13: A tragic accident occurred in Nongpoh on Saturday morning when the slab of a building undergoing demolition suddenly collapsed, trapping four daily wage labourers beneath the debris. The incident claimed the life of one worker while another sustained serious injuries.
According to reports, the deceased has been identified as Jelin Mangu (20), while the injured worker is Solar Lymphuid (19). The other two labourers, Nalor Myrsing (19) and Turbor Damlong (22) escaped with minor injuries. All four workers are residents of Umpathaw village in Ri-Bhoi district.
Sources said the incident took place at around 10:00 am on Saturday. The building where the workers were employed reportedly belongs to Ngaitlang Dhar and is located in the heart of Nongpoh town. The structure was undergoing renovation at the time of the accident.
The four labourers were engaged in dismantling a boundary structure of a building in Nongpoh when the slab unexpectedly gave way and crashed down on them. The collapse trapped the workers, leading to panic at the site.
Upon receiving information about the accident, local residents rushed to the spot and launched a rescue effort. The injured worker was first pulled out from the debris and immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital, Nongpoh, for medical treatment. After several hours of rescue operations, another worker who remained trapped under the rubble was recovered, but he had already succumbed to his injuries.
Police personnel arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and shifted the body of the deceased to Civil Hospital for necessary legal formalities. An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact cause of the slab collapse.
Authorities are continuing their inquiry into the incident.
