Shillong, July 25 : Lady Keane College celebrated its 91st Foundation Day on Saturday under the theme, “Building Tomorrow with 91 Years of Legacy,” highlighting its long-standing contribution to academic excellence, women’s empowerment and nation-building.
Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui attended the programme as the chief guest. The celebration was also attended by Directorate of Higher and Technical Education Director H.B.D. Sangma, members of the Governing Board, distinguished alumni, faculty members, students, staff and invited guests.
Addressing the gathering, Rymbui congratulated the college for shaping generations of women leaders and contributing significantly to the development of education in Meghalaya and the Northeast. He described the institution as a symbol of excellence whose contribution extends beyond academics to the empowerment of women and society.
The Education Minister urged students to remain focused, disciplined, patient and purposeful while navigating a rapidly changing world marked by technological advancement and expanding opportunities.
Reflecting on the transformation of communication from community television to smartphones, artificial intelligence and instant digital content, he said that although technology has changed the way information is delivered, the need to communicate meaningful messages and create a positive impact remains unchanged.
Rymbui also encouraged students to use technology responsibly, protect their mental well-being, think critically and make informed decisions. He said the State Government remains committed to investing in education and youth development and creating platforms that promote innovation, collaboration and meaningful participation in policy and development.
He called upon students, educators, alumni and other stakeholders to work collectively towards strengthening Meghalaya’s education ecosystem.
Speaking at the programme, H.B.D. Sangma congratulated Lady Keane College for its contribution to women’s education and empowerment, describing it as a beacon of excellence that continues to inspire generations of students.
She said students must move beyond classroom learning by embracing innovation, creativity, critical thinking, entrepreneurship and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
While academic qualifications provide opportunities, she said qualities such as character, attitude, competence, creativity and a willingness to continue learning ultimately determine success.
Sangma also appreciated the principal, faculty, staff and alumni for their cooperation with the Directorate in conducting examinations, implementing academic reforms and supporting higher education initiatives.
She encouraged students to step beyond their comfort zones, respect their parents and teachers, protect the environment, use technology wisely, take pride in Meghalaya’s cultural heritage and lead with humility, passion and compassion.
During the programme, the Education Minister released the college magazine, the Keanean Journal of Arts and the Annual History Magazine, marking another milestone in the institution’s academic and literary journey.
Awards and recognitions were also presented to outstanding students, faculty members and institutional bodies for achievements in research publications, academics, student cells, the Persons with Disabilities Cell, fashion design, and co-curricular and extracurricular activities.
The celebration also featured cultural performances by students, showcasing the talent, creativity and cultural heritage of the college community.
As Lady Keane College moves towards its centenary, the institution reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing excellence, empowering young women and preparing responsible citizens who can contribute meaningfully to Meghalaya and the country.
