Shillong, July 28: A law student of Shillong Law College on Tuesday filed an FIR at Sadar Police Station against Senior Advocate A.H. Hazarika, alleging that he forcibly grabbed her and touched her inappropriately.
Speaking to the media after filing the complaint in the presence of leaders of the Hynñiewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), East Khasi Hills District, the student said she had recently started an internship at Hazarika’s chamber on Keatinge Road, Shillong.
According to her, the alleged incident took place at around 3:16 pm on Tuesday. She claimed that Hazarika asked her to collect case-related documents from another room and asked her to deliver them to her fellow students. However, she alleged that when she turned around to leave, he followed her, forcibly hugged her and touched her inappropriately.
The student further alleged that Hazarika offered her money and asked her to return on Saturday. She said she immediately refused the money, but he allegedly insisted and placed it inside the blazer she was wearing. She then left the room and placed the money on a sofa before leaving the premises. The student said she was frightened by the incident and left the chamber crying.
She also stated that she had started her internship only on Tuesday last week and had joined Hazarika’s chamber through an introduction by her friends. The student appealed to other female students undertaking internships to exercise caution while choosing advocates for their internships.
She also urged the police to take stringent action and ensure the safety of women, particularly female students undergoing internships, so that they do not face similar alleged incidents.
Meanwhile, HNYF East Khasi Hills District president Steve Khyriem urged the Sadar Police to immediately arrest A.H. Hazarika. He also appealed to the Shillong Bar Association to immediately suspend his membership.
