Man Sentenced to Five Years’ Rigorous Imprisonment in Sohra Stabbing Case

Shillong, August 27 : A court in East Khasi Hills has convicted Stephan Khongtim in connection with a 2023 stabbing case registered at Sohra Police Station and sentenced him to five years’ rigorous imprisonment.

According to a press release issued by East Khasi Hills Police, an FIR was received at Sohra Police Station on March 21, 2023, alleging that Khongtim had stabbed the complainant in the stomach on February 24, 2023.

A case was subsequently registered as Sohra Police Station Case No. 08(03)2023 under Sections 307 and 326 of the Indian Penal Code. Khongtim was arrested during the investigation, and a charge sheet was filed on April 28, 2023.

On July 29, 2026, the Court of B. Laitmon, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial), East Khasi Hills, Shillong, convicted Khongtim in the case.

For the offence under Section 307 IPC, the court sentenced him to five years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹20,000. In default of payment of the fine, he will undergo an additional two months’ simple imprisonment.

The court also sentenced him to two years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹5,000 for the offence under Section 326 IPC. In default of payment, he will undergo an additional one month of simple imprisonment.

Police said Khongtim had already undergone two years, five months and 16 days of imprisonment and will therefore have to serve the remaining sentence of two years, one month and 20 days in jail.

The case was investigated by SI Habanjop Khonglah, who is presently posted at Mawshynrut Police Station in West Khasi Hills district.
