Mawstep Indigenous Cafe Inaugurated to Celebrate Traditional Food and Community Livelihoods

Shillong, September 24 : The Mawstep Primary Agroecology Cooperative Society has opened a new Indigenous Café at Umsohphlang, Mawstep, under Khatarshnong Laitkroh Block, marking a major boost for Meghalaya’s indigenous food movement. The cafe was officially inaugurated by Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem in the presence of community leaders, partners, and schoolchildren .

The event, supported by IPAF-Tebtebba and LIC-HFL CSR, showcased cultural performances including a song by Mawstep Presbyterian LP School students. Representatives from four partner communities—Nongwah, Mawpynthymmai, Umsawwar, and Ladmawphlang—joined the celebration as they prepare to open their own indigenous cafés, while youth trained as Nature Guides underscored the project’s focus on empowering the next generation .

In her welcome address, Piolin Diengdoh lauded NESFAS and community members for their dedication. Headman Betsing Rynjah expressed optimism that the cafe would strengthen nature-based livelihoods and draw more tourists. “We aim to market chemical-free products from our community and beyond,” he said, adding that the location on the David Scott Trail makes it ideal for visitors .

Ka Synjuk Secretary Tambor Lyngdoh stressed the importance of preserving nature while fostering economic growth and recalled the unity showcased during International Terra Madre 2015. NESFAS Executive Director Pius Ranee described the cafe as a hub for local cuisines and youth employment, appealing for continued support from government and tourism networks .

Chief Guest Gavin Mylliem hailed NESFAS and the cooperative for their efforts, noting that tourists increasingly prefer local food. He encouraged the community to keep working together, highlighting the need to preserve traditional foods and protect the environment: “Our environment is part of us, and it is our responsibility to safeguard it” .

Delivering the vote of thanks, Samborlang Nongrum reflected on the collective effort behind the project, quoting, “If you want to walk fast, walk alone. But if you want to walk far, walk together.”

The Mawstep Indigenous Café stands as a powerful statement of resilience and cultural pride, positioning Meghalaya’s traditional food systems on the global map while creating sustainable livelihoods for the local community .
