Shillong, July 1: Meghalaya has entered a new era of advanced cardiac care with the successful completion of the state’s first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure using the indigenous MYVAL Transcatheter Heart Valve System, developed by Meril.
The landmark procedure was performed by Dr. Synrang Warjri, with noted structural heart specialist Dr. Joy Shome serving as the proctor. The achievement marks a major advancement in the state’s healthcare capabilities and brings world-class structural heart interventions closer to patients in Meghalaya and the wider Northeast.
TAVI is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat severe aortic stenosis, a potentially life-threatening narrowing of the heart’s aortic valve. Unlike conventional open-heart surgery, TAVI allows eligible patients to undergo treatment with less trauma, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, and improved clinical outcomes.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Synrang Warjri described the successful procedure as a significant milestone in Meghalaya’s healthcare journey.
“Meghalaya’s first TAVI procedure marks a significant milestone in the state’s healthcare journey. We are proud to successfully perform this advanced structural heart intervention using the MYVAL Transcatheter Heart Valve System. This achievement reflects the growing capabilities of our medical teams and ensures that patients in the region can access world-class cardiac care closer to home. It is a step forward in making advanced, lifesaving treatments more accessible to people across Northeast India,” he said.
Dr. Joy Shome, Senior Consultant in Cardiology and Head of TAVR/TAVI at B M Birla Hospital, said the successful procedure demonstrated the increasing expertise of healthcare teams in the Northeast.
“The successful completion of Meghalaya’s first TAVI procedure demonstrates the growing expertise and readiness of healthcare teams in the Northeast to adopt advanced structural heart therapies. It is encouraging to see such complex interventions being performed closer to patients, reducing the need for travel while ensuring access to high-quality cardiac care. This milestone will pave the way for wider adoption of advanced heart valve therapies across the region,” he said.
Healthcare experts noted that the achievement reflects the broader transformation taking place in India’s healthcare system, where advanced medical procedures once limited to major metropolitan hospitals are now becoming available in emerging healthcare centres. The development is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for specialised cardiac treatment.
The successful introduction of TAVI in Meghalaya has been attributed to the combined efforts of healthcare professionals, medical institutions, and indigenous medical technology innovators, alongside continued investments in physician training, clinical education, and healthcare infrastructure.
Experts added that the state’s first TAVI procedure is not only a clinical breakthrough but also a testament to India’s growing ability to deliver advanced, equitable healthcare across the country, ensuring that cutting-edge cardiac therapies are increasingly accessible even in smaller cities and underserved regions.
