Meghalaya, Assam Agree on Immediate Steps to Defuse Lapangap Border Tension

Shillong, May 29: Meghalaya and Assam have agreed on a series of immediate measures aimed at easing tensions in the Lapangap area along the inter-state border following a high-level meeting between the chief ministers of the two states in Guwahati on Friday.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to discuss the recent developments in Lapangap, which have sparked concern in both states over the past several weeks.

Describing the meeting as “very positive and very constructive,” Sangma said the discussions focused exclusively on the situation in Lapangap and efforts to restore normalcy in the area.

He said both governments have been engaging with various stakeholders for several weeks in an attempt to find a peaceful resolution to the issue.

Officials from both state governments, including district-level authorities, were also present during the discussions.

According to Sangma, both sides have worked out certain measures that could help de-escalate the situation, and concerned officials will begin implementing these steps over the coming days.

The Chief Minister urged residents and stakeholders on both sides of the border to cooperate and work together in a constructive manner.

He emphasized the need for mutual trust and dialogue to ensure not only a short-term solution but also lasting peace and stability in the region.

On the broader Assam-Meghalaya boundary dispute, Sangma said discussions would resume after the completion of the Assam cabinet formation process.

He stated that once all ministers in the Assam government have taken oath and the new cabinet is fully in place, both states will take up discussions on the larger border-related issues.

Sangma expressed optimism that the immediate measures agreed upon would help resolve the current situation in Lapangap and appealed to all stakeholders to extend their cooperation in maintaining peace.
