Shillong January 7 : Meghalaya Police are investigating a variety of criminal incidents reported across the state, including thefts, online fraud, assaults, and border-related issues.
Financial Crimes:
- Shillong GPay Fraud: A Shillong resident reported being a victim of a GPay scam on January 3rd. An individual identifying himself as “Raju” contacted her, claiming that Rs. 25,000 had been mistakenly transferred to her account. He requested a return transfer. However, the complainant later discovered that Rs. 35,000 had been debited from her account without her authorization.
- Tura Online Loan Fraud: A Tura resident reported a sophisticated online loan fraud. On December 23, 2024, a Rs. 4.5 lakh loan was disbursed to her through the Axis Bank WhatsApp application. Of this amount, Rs. 1,11,484 was used to settle previous dues, leaving Rs. 3,38,516 in her account. On December 26th, she received a call from someone claiming to be from Axis Bank Customer Care. The caller requested her debit card details and instructed her to download an application and share an OTP, supposedly to activate her EMI payments. After complying, her entire remaining bank balance was fraudulently withdrawn.
- West Garo Hills Loan Dispute: Huinseng A Sangma of Jenggitchakgre, West Garo Hills, reported a financial dispute. He alleges that Ginseng M Sangma borrowed Rs. 6.3 lakh with a promise to repay the amount plus Rs. 2.1 lakh in interest by September 18, 2024. However, the borrower has reportedly failed to make the repayment.
Vehicle Thefts:
- Shillong Motorcycle Theft: Ronnie Khongsngi reported that his motorcycle (ML-05AC-5137) was stolen on the night of January 3rd from the Mawblei Petrol Pump in Shillong.
- Ri-Bhoi Motorcycle Theft: Hiday Barman reported the theft of his motorcycle (AS-01FZ-6224) from Byrnihat Market Nongrim, Ri-Bhoi, on January 1st at approximately 3:00 AM.
- Tura Scooter Theft: Hezikia D Sangma, a resident of RC Road, Tura, West Garo Hills, reported that his scooter (ML-08J-7998) was discovered missing from its parking place on January 3rd.
Other Crimes:
- East Khasi Hills Suspected Cattle Theft: On the evening of January 4th, residents of Laitumsaw village under Dangar OP (East Khasi Hills) detained three individuals: Silvester Lartang (28 years old), Balbina Marak (28 years old), and Merila A Sangma (35 years old). The villagers suspected their involvement in cattle theft and recovered one head of cattle from a nearby jungle.
- West Jaintia Hills Unclaimed Cattle Recoveries: (1): ASI V Singh of G-Coy, 4th Bn., BSF, SP-Tilla BOP (West Jaintia Hills) reported that on January 3rd at around 10:00 PM, BSF personnel recovered four head of unclaimed cattle near Border Pillar No. 1288/MP.
- (2): The Party Commander of G-Coy, BOP Sanghat, 4th Bn., BSF reported that on January 4th, BSF personnel recovered five head of unclaimed cattle near Border Pillar No. 1293/MP (West Jaintia Hills).
- South West Garo Hills Border Breach: The Coy Commander of G-Coy, 50th Bn., BSF reported that on January 4th, BSF personnel discovered a breach in the Indo-Bangladesh International Border fence between Picket No. 1740 and 1741, PFL No. 37 TC 38 under BOP Kalaichar (South West Garo Hills).
- East Garo Hills Assault: A woman from East Garo Hills reported being attacked with a wooden stool by Jelsing Ch Marak on December 25, 2024, in Williamnagar.
- West Garo Hills Drug Seizure: On January 5th, police intercepted Jamer Ali (28 yrs) near Chandamari Market and seized 11.1 grams of suspected heroin from his possession.
- Shillong Burglary: Silseng C Marak reported a burglary at his MePDCL quarter on Camel Back Road, Shillong, on December 30, 2024. Items stolen included a drilling machine set, an iron, and utensils.
