Shillong, September 28: Meghalaya is confident of completing preparations for the 27th National Games within the next six months, with infrastructure development and logistical arrangements progressing across the state, according to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly’s Estimates Committee.
Committee Chairman and Nongpoh BJP legislator Mayralborn Syiem on Monday reviewed the state’s preparedness for the 2027 National Games with officials of the Sports and Youth Affairs Department.
Syiem said the department briefed the committee on ongoing preparations, including the development of sporting infrastructure in Shillong, Tura, Jowai and selected areas of East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi, where different disciplines are expected to be held.
He said preparations are also underway to train athletes who will represent Meghalaya in the Games.
While acknowledging that accommodation, transportation and other logistical requirements remain major challenges, Syiem said the committee was optimistic that the necessary arrangements and infrastructure would be completed on time.
“We still have another six months,” he said, expressing confidence that pending works would be completed within the stipulated period.
The National Games are expected to feature 39 sporting disciplines, with Meghalaya serving as the principal host while other Northeastern states are expected to host at least one discipline each.
Syiem said the state government has also invested significantly in preparing local athletes, including arrangements for proper diet, training and coaching.
He added that the Chief Minister and Sports Minister are keen to bring in qualified coaches from within India and abroad to help Meghalaya athletes compete for gold, silver and bronze medals at the Games.
