Shillong, June 3: The Department of Environment and Traditional Ecosystems (DETE) of Martin Luther Christian University organized The Himalayan Cleanup 2026 on Tuesday, bringing together students, faculty members and staff in a collective effort to promote environmental responsibility and sustainable waste management.
The cleanup drive commenced from the university’s Nongrah Campus and covered surrounding localities, extending up to the river area and Lapalang Market. The initiative formed part of the wider Himalayan Cleanup movement, which aims to raise awareness about waste management challenges across the Himalayan region while encouraging long-term behavioural changes for a cleaner and healthier environment.
During the programme, participants collected, segregated and audited waste before ensuring its responsible disposal. The activity highlighted the need to reduce plastic pollution, adopt responsible consumption habits and strengthen community participation in environmental conservation efforts.
Organizers noted that the Himalayan Cleanup campaign goes beyond simply cleaning public spaces. Waste audits conducted during such initiatives help identify local consumption patterns and assess the prevalence of single-use plastics and other non-biodegradable waste materials, providing valuable insights for future waste management strategies.
The Department of Environment and Traditional Ecosystems expressed gratitude to all volunteers and participants whose enthusiastic involvement contributed to the success of the programme.
