Shillong, September 3: The North Eastern Council (NEC) has completed development projects worth ₹28.08 crore in Meghalaya during July and August 2026, while releasing another ₹7.86 crore for ongoing initiatives in education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, tourism and community development.
According to an NEC press release, ₹4.90 crore was released for the construction of modern school buildings at eight Ramakrishna Mission schools located at Laidiengsai, Nongkynrih, Mawrah, Pomsohmen, Laitryngew, Wahlong, Nongjri Pynursla and Nongjri Nartiang.
The Council also released ₹2.50 crore for the ongoing Integrated Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Centre, which has been sanctioned at ₹10 crore and is aimed at promoting skills and sustainable enterprises among tribal youth, women entrepreneurs and rural cultivators.
Another ₹1.17 crore was released for upgrading seven PRIME HUBS across Meghalaya to provide incubation and mentoring support to aspiring entrepreneurs. Besides, ₹46.50 lakh was allocated for tourism infrastructure development at Laitlynkot (Lamlyer) in East Khasi Hills.
Among the projects completed during the two-month period was the Community Development Programme for Tiwa (Lalung) communities in Ri-Bhoi district at a sanctioned cost of ₹2.94 crore. The project, implemented by the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi, focuses on soil conservation, protection of natural spring-water catchments and forest biodiversity.
In the health sector, the NEC completed installation of an advanced 1.5 Tesla MRI machine at Tura Civil Hospital at a cost of ₹6.69 crore. The facility is expected to provide improved diagnostic imaging services in the Garo Hills and reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for such services. The MRI facility is also pictured in the press release on page two.
The Council also announced the completion of a livelihood centre and design, innovation and training workshops linked to a water hyacinth craft cluster, valued at ₹368.69 lakh, on August 25.
Projects involving the upgrading of Ramakrishna Mission schools at Jalapet, Laitlynkot, Laitlyndop, Mylliem, Umploh and Mawkynriew were also completed at a combined sanctioned cost of ₹13.14 crore under the Focused Development of Deprived Areas programme.
Separately, the NEC said it disbursed ₹16.22 crore to regional agencies, universities and technical bodies for initiatives including overseas placement programmes in Japan for youth from the Northeast, Functional Hindi courses implemented by IIM Shillong, an impact study on post-2014 road connectivity and a publication on the life and legacy of Padma Shri Major Bob Khathing.
