Shillong, July 15: The North Eastern Council (NEC), under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, released more than ₹13.58 crore during May and June 2026 to support development projects across Meghalaya. The funds, released under the Schemes of NEC, will support initiatives in healthcare, education, renewable energy, research, cultural preservation, connectivity and community infrastructure.
Among the major healthcare projects supported was the installation of a 1.5 Tesla MRI system at Tura Civil Hospital. The facility is expected to improve diagnostic services for patients from the Garo Hills and neighbouring areas.
In the education sector, the NEC provided assistance for infrastructure development at Shillong Polytechnic and the development of a multidisciplinary training-cum-resource centre in Shillong by the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society.
Financial assistance was also extended for the Seng Khasi Cultural Complex and the Seinraij Jowai Community Hall to create improved spaces for cultural, educational and community activities.
The NEC supported infrastructure upgrades at Iewduh Market to improve facilities for traders, farmers and consumers. It also funded surveys and investigations for the Mawblei, Myntdu Leshka Stage-II and Selim hydroelectric projects, paving the way for future clean-energy development in the state.
During the same period, the Council released ₹18.93 crore to regional agencies, including universities, technical institutes, non-governmental organisations and societies, for activities promoting the Northeast. A portion of the funding supported events and studies conducted in Meghalaya, including the Industry-Academia Research Conclave organised by NIT Meghalaya and the Miss and Mister Beauty Pageant 2026 at NEIGRIHMS, Shillong.
The completion of the NEC-funded Shillong–Umroi Airport Road improvement project in June 2026 was also highlighted as a major boost to tourism, trade and regional connectivity.
The NEC said the investments reflected its commitment to promoting inclusive and sustainable development and improving public services and quality of life across Meghalaya.
