NEIGRIHMS faculty brings accolades through innovative patent in the field of Forensic Medicine

Shillong, October 11 : The Department of Forensic Medicine, NEIGRIHMS has achieved another milestone in the field of Forensic Medicine by designing an instrument for the exploration and examination of the spinal cord. The autopsy instrument which is developed by the department’s faculty for removal and examination of the spinal cord is now patented with the Patent Office, Government of India. Dr Daunipaia Slong (Additional Professor, Forensic Medicine) & Prof. A J Patowary (HoD Forensic Medicine) achieved this remarkable feat at NEIGRIHMS.

Dr. Daunipaia added that during autopsy, many a times examination of the spinal cord is essential to asses any trauma or pathology in the spinal cord. Conventionally during autopsy, the spinal cord is examined either by the anterior approach or the posterior approach after cutting through the vertebrae. These conventional methods are time consuming and cause distortion to the architecture of the spine. However, examination of the spinal cord using the new patented device overcomes these issues and makes the whole procedure quick, easy to perform and without any additional deformity to the body.

Director NEIGRIHMS, Prof. Nalin Mehta applauded the efforts form the faculty and congratulated the faculty and the staff from Forensic Medicine department. Prof. Mehta further added that this invention from NEIGRIHMS, will ease up the process of exploration and examination of the spinal cord in the field of Forensic Medicine.
