Shillong, April 29: The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills has imposed a night curfew along the Indo-Bangladesh border to curb illegal cross-border activities and maintain law and order in the district.
The order, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), mandates a curfew from 6:30 PM to 6:00 AM within a 200-metre radius from the Zero Line (international border).
According to the order, the decision was taken following reports from the Border Security Force (BSF) and local administrative officials highlighting the risk of infiltration by illegal migrants, smuggling activities, and movement of anti-national elements in the unfenced border areas.
The curfew prohibits:
- Movement of individuals attempting to cross the international border or enter Indian territory illegally
- Unlawful assembly of five or more persons, especially those carrying weapons or objects that could be used as weapons
- Illegal activities such as smuggling of cattle, contraband goods, betel nut, dry fish, cigarettes, and other items
Authorities stated that such activities, if unchecked, could pose a serious threat to peace and security in the district and beyond.
The order has been issued on an urgent basis and will remain in force for six months from the date of issuance, unless withdrawn earlier.
Residents living near the border have been advised to strictly comply with the restrictions and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure safety and security.
