Operation Safer Shillong: 80 traffic violations detected in weekend crackdown, ₹81,500 in fines collected

Shillong, June 27: As part of its ongoing Operation Safer Shillong, the Shillong Traffic Police (STP), in collaboration with the Special Operation Team (SOT) and members of the Laitumkhrah Dorbar, conducted a synchronised multi-point weekend NAKA checking drive across Shillong on the night of June 26. The operation forms part of the city’s broader mission to achieve Zero Road Fatalities through strict enforcement of traffic laws.

In a press statement issued by SP East Khasi Hills Vivek Syiem, the special drive targeted drunken driving, illegal vehicle modifications, and other traffic violations at multiple locations across the city. According to the enforcement summary released by the police, a total of 80 traffic violation cases were detected during the operation, with ₹81,500 collected in fines, SP informed.

Authorities said motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol were not permitted to continue their journey. Instead, they were released only after a responsible person arrived to escort them home safely, ensuring the safety of both the offenders and other road users.

The Shillong Traffic Police reiterated that such weekend enforcement drives will continue regularly under Operation Safer Shillong as part of its zero-tolerance approach to traffic violations. The initiative aims to encourage responsible driving, eliminate drunken driving, and promote strict adherence to traffic rules, thereby making the city’s roads safer for all.

The Shillong Traffic Police reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Shillong into a Zero Road Fatality City through sustained enforcement, public cooperation, and increased road safety awareness.
