Shillong, April 15: The Meghalaya Police have obtained eight days’ custody of Kennedy Khongsit, the accused in the murder of a 39-year-old woman at Nongrah, and have completed reconstruction of the crime scene based on his admission.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem informed on Wednesday that Khongsit, who was recently arrested in connection with the murder of a seven-year-old boy, has now been remanded to police custody in the Nongrah murder case involving the victim, Eilang Phawa.
The SP stated that substantial interrogation has already been carried out. He added that the accused led the police team to the crime site in the presence of independent witnesses and demonstrated how the crime was committed.
According to the reconstruction, Khongsit allegedly took the victim behind a house to a public toilet area, where he assaulted her by striking her against a concrete structure. He later disposed of the body in a sack.
Syiem further said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is working towards filing the chargesheet at the earliest.
On the motive behind the crime, the SP revealed that initial interrogation indicates it was an act driven by rage. The accused reportedly stated that he became irritated during an interaction with the victim, allegedly due to remarks made by her, which led to the fatal assault.
Police also confirmed that Khongsit has undergone a psychological assessment and was found to be mentally stable. Further details regarding his background are still under investigation.
