Shillong, December 11: The Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Thomas A. Sangma, on Thursday conducted an extensive inspection of the under-construction Assembly building complex at Mawdiangdiang. He was accompanied by the Deputy Speaker and senior officials from multiple departments as they reviewed the progress of ongoing works.
The inspection focused on readiness for the upcoming Pre-Christmas celebration scheduled for 19 December 2025, which will be hosted at the new Assembly premises for the first time. The Speaker noted that work is progressing as planned and expressed satisfaction with the arrangements being put in place.
A major component of the inspection was the review of the power supply system being implemented by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL). The Speaker shared that constructive discussions were held with MeECL officials to expedite the connection of the main power line to the complex.
The delegation also evaluated issues related to additional land requirements in consultation with the Urban Affairs Department. Field inspections were carried out to assess the site and coordinate further steps as part of the project review.
Thomas A. Sangma expressed confidence in the pace and quality of construction, reaffirming that the project remains on track to meet the timeline recommended by the High-Powered Committee (HPC).
He also recalled that the main Assembly Hall is slated for completion by June 2026, after which Assembly sessions will begin at the new complex.
The inspection team included Deputy Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Limison D. Sangma, Commissioner & Secretary Andrew Simons, Secretary Malthus S. Sangma of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, the Executive Engineer, Technical Adviser to the Assembly, officials of MeECL, and representatives from the Urban Affairs Department.
