Shlong, May 22: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that the biennial election for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Meghalaya will be held on June 18, 2026, following the retirement of sitting MP Dr. Wanweiroy Kharlukhi.
According to the press note issued by the ECI on Friday, Dr. Kharlukhi’s term in the Council of States is scheduled to end on June 21, 2026.
The Commission informed that the notification for the election will be issued on June 1, while the last date for filing nominations has been fixed for June 8.
Scrutiny of nominations will take place on June 9 and candidates can withdraw their nominations till June 11.
Polling for the Rajya Sabha election will be conducted on June 18 from 9 am to 4 pm, while counting of votes will begin at 5 pm on the same day.
The Election Commission also stated that the entire election process will be completed before June 20.
The ECI further said that only integrated violet colour sketch pens provided by the Returning Officer will be used for marking preferences on ballot papers and adequate measures, including appointment of observers, will be taken to ensure free and fair elections.
