Authorities Plan Eviction Drive Against Encroachment Along Shillong-Dawki Road

Shillong, May 22: The East Khasi Hills district administration has decided to carry out an eviction drive against hawkers and illegal parking within the Right of Way (RoW) along the newly constructed Shillong-Dawki road stretch from Rilbong Point to Upper Shillong.

According to an official press release, a meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) R. M. Kurbah was held on May 15 to discuss the issue of encroachment within the RoW after concerns were raised by the Manager (Projects), NHIDCL, PMU-Mylliem.

The meeting noted that hawkers have encroached upon several locations along Rilbong Point, 3½ Mile Upper Shillong and 7th Mile Upper Shillong. Concerns were also raised over the setting up of a parking lot at Rilbong Point.

Officials observed that the encroachments pose risks to public safety, hawkers and vehicular movement along the busy road stretch. Following deliberations, it was decided that officials from Shillong Traffic Police, PWD (Roads) NH Division Shillong and NHIDCL would jointly collaborate to evict the hawkers from the RoW areas.

The meeting also decided that NHIDCL would place markings along the acquired RoW, while the Superintendent of Police (Traffic) would install barricades to restrict vehicle parking within the RoW and deploy police personnel at the site.

Further, NHIDCL, PWD (Roads) NH Division and police personnel will carry out the eviction process after prior awareness is given to all concerned.
