Ri-Bhoi District Issues Weather Warning; Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Expected Till May 1

Nongpoh, April 27: The Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Ri-Bhoi District, has issued a weather warning following forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), alerting the public of thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds from April 27 to May 1, 2026.

According to the advisory, the district is expected to experience very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, with wind speeds ranging between 40–50 kmph during the period. On May 1, heavy rainfall with similar wind conditions is also likely.

Authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions to ensure safety. The advisory cautions against exposure to strong winds, which may displace loose objects such as tin sheets, signboards, and construction materials. The public has also been advised to switch off electrical appliances during lightning and remain cautious of possible flash floods, particularly in low-lying areas and near rivers and streams.

Residents are strongly discouraged from venturing near water bodies, including rivers, streams, drains, and waterfalls, due to the risk of sudden surges and strong currents. Driving through flooded areas and staying close to electric poles or power lines should also be avoided to prevent accidents and electrocution.

In case of emergencies, the public has been asked to dial 112 or contact the District Emergency Operation Centre, DC’s Office, Ri-Bhoi District.

The district administration has appealed to all citizens to remain alert and adhere to safety guidelines during the forecast period to minimize risks and ensure public safety.
