SANBOR SAYS UCC WOULD DILUTE UNIQUE MATRILINEAL NORMS OF MEGHALAYA

Shillong, July 18 : Sanbor Shullai, an elected BJP MLA from Meghalaya, has opposed the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. Shullai said that the UCC would dilute the unique matrilineal norms of Meghalaya, which are protected under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Shullai said that the majority of the tribal population in Meghalaya fear that the UCC would infringe on their traditional and customary laws. He also said that the central government has been kind enough to exempt tribal areas of the northeastern states from the Citizenship Amendment Act, and that the same principle should be applied to the UCC.

Shullai has written to the Law Commission of India, which is currently seeking public feedback on the UCC, to appeal for the exemption of Meghalaya from the UCC.
