Sanbor Shullai inaugurates new Municipal market at Iewdak, announces ₹39 crore worth of development projects

Shillong, July 18: Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister and South Shillong MLA, Shri Sanbor Shullai, on Saturday inaugurated the newly constructed municipal market at Iewdak, Laban, Shillong, marking a major boost to commercial infrastructure in the locality.

The newly built RCC+4 commercial complex, which also houses a community hall for the Dorbar Shnong Laban, was constructed under a North Eastern Council (NEC), Government of India scheme at a sanctioned cost of ₹14.27 crore. The project was implemented by the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) and was initiated and recommended by Shullai.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister announced that an additional ₹2 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of a hall on the terrace of the building, which will serve the residents of the South Shillong constituency.

He also informed that another ₹2 crore has been sanctioned for the renovation of the Lumshatsngi Market, with work scheduled to commence later this month.

Shullai further revealed that an infrastructure development proposal worth ₹35 crore has been moved for the cantonment area to improve civic amenities and public infrastructure.

Earlier in the day, the Minister also inaugurated a motorable-cum-aquaduct drainage system road constructed at a cost of ₹1.65 crore.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri S.K. Bhalla (ITS), Secretary, North Eastern Council, Meghalaya, said the new market complex would not only create livelihood opportunities for local people but would also promote cultural preservation and strengthen community empowerment through the inclusion of the Dorbar Shnong office and the community hall.

Meanwhile, Shri Edward Kharwanlang, representing the Dorbar Shnong Laban, urged shopkeepers and members of the public to maintain cleanliness and ensure the proper upkeep of the newly inaugurated market complex.
