Shillong, May 6: Shillong Traffic Police has issued a strong warning against the use of illegal modified exhaust pipes and pressure horns, stating that such modifications violate the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and contribute to noise pollution and public disturbance.
According to the advisory, vehicles fitted with modified or excessively loud exhaust systems are liable to face penalties, including fines of up to ₹5,000. Authorities also warned that illegal modifications may be seized or removed during enforcement drives.
Officials stated that modified exhausts and pressure horns not only create nuisance in residential and public areas but can also pose safety concerns on roads.
The traffic police urged vehicle owners to keep their vehicles road-legal and avoid unauthorised alterations that violate traffic regulations.
“Your exhaust should move the vehicle — not disturb the entire neighbourhood,” the advisory stated while appealing to citizens to drive responsibly and cooperate with authorities in maintaining safer and quieter roads.
