Shillong, April 23: Two men, both non-locals, died by suspected suicide in separate incidents of hanging reported in Shillong on Thursday morning, police said. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem informed that the first incident occurred at the Laban Police Station premises. A traffic Home Guard volunteer noticed a man behaving suspiciously near the station around 6:30 AM. Within minutes, the man entered the compound and at around 6:50 AM allegedly hanged himself using a rope.
The deceased has been identified as Mithung Gurung (38), a resident of Lumparing, Shillong. Police conducted an inquest in the presence of a magistrate and later shifted the body to NEIGRIHMS Hospital for post-mortem examination. Preliminary inquiry revealed that the man was a daily wage worker with no visible injury marks. Police suspect possible mental health issues as a factor behind the incident.
In a separate case at Laimer, Upper Shillong, another man identified as Vijay Kumar Singh (21), a resident of Riatsohkhlur, Nongkseh was found hanging near SBI Laimer. Police received information around 5:00 AM from morning walkers. A team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) visited the spot for investigation before the body was sent to NEIGRIHMS Hospital for post-mortem.
Both cases have been registered as Unnatural Death (UD) cases. SP Syiem clarified that there is no connection between the two incidents. “They do not appear to know each other. It is merely coincidental that both incidents occurred on the same morning,” he said. He further added that no injury marks were found on either body, and the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem reports are received.
