UMIAM BRIDGE REPAIR NEARS COMPLETION : POWER MINISTER

Shillong’ July 26 : Meghalaya Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal today expressed optimism about the reopening of Umiam Bridge by the end of the month, following a high-level inspection of the ongoing repair works.

The Minister visited the bridge to assess the progress of the Dam Rehabilitation & Improvement Projects (DRIP) being undertaken by Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL). Prior to the inspection, a review meeting was held with key officials from the Power Department, MeECL, and ITD Cementation.

Mondal highlighted the importance of completing the remaining works swiftly to ensure the safety and durability of the bridge. A high-power committee meeting is scheduled for Monday to finalize the reopening date, with participation from experts from IIT Guwahati, Police, PWD and District Administrations from East Khasi Hills And Ri Bhoi District.

The DRIP project, initiated on December 14, 2023, aims to rehabilitate and improve the dam and its components through works such as drilling, grouting, crack repair, and hydro mechanical enhancements.
