Meghalaya Aims for Plastic-Free National Games with ₹1890 Crore Biodegradable Push

Shillong, May 14 : Meghalaya is setting ambitious green goals for the upcoming 39th National Games, announcing plans for a completely biodegradable event. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma revealed this commitment today during a visit to Nongpiyur Government LP School, where he inspected a toilet constructed from single-use plastic waste.

In a significant move towards sustainability, the Chief Minister announced a substantial investment of approximately ₹1890 crores for a state-of-the-art factory. This facility will produce starch-based bags and bottles, aiming to replace traditional plastics and pave the way for a truly eco-friendly National Games. “My target is that the National Games should be completely biodegradable,” CM Sangma asserted, underscoring the urgency of this initiative.

The upcoming National Games will serve as a crucial platform for Meghalaya to showcase its dedication to environmental responsibility. By investing in biodegradable alternatives and supporting innovative recycling projects, the state intends to not only host a successful sporting event but also inspire the nation with its sustainable practices.

A company has already surveyed the region and is eager to establish the biodegradable production plant in Meghalaya, seeking the state government’s support – a project wholeheartedly endorsed by the Chief Minister. This positions Meghalaya as a frontrunner in adopting such cutting-edge sustainable solutions.

Acknowledging the complexities of a complete plastic ban, which extends beyond bags to various packaging, the Chief Minister emphasized a phased approach. He highlighted the necessity of community involvement alongside government efforts to achieve meaningful change.

Adding to the vision of a greener Meghalaya, Nicholas Kharkamni from Super Campaign, Meghalaya Shillong, presented an inspiring project focused on recycling plastic waste within schools. His innovative approach involves transforming collected plastic into essential infrastructure like toilets, offering a practical solution for waste management while improving sanitation. The Chief Minister lauded this initiative for its dual impact on environmental sustainability and community well-being.

The event was also attended by MLA and advisor to the Government of Meghalaya Hamlet Dohling, Director of School Education and Literacy J A Marvin, the Sub Divisional School Education Officer, and the headmaster and teachers of Nongpiyur Government Lower Primary School. Chief Minister Sangma also committed to procuring musical instruments for the school.

This multi-pronged approach, combining large-scale investment in biodegradable alternatives with grassroots recycling initiatives, signals Meghalaya’s strong commitment to hosting a truly plastic-free and environmentally responsible National Games.
