Concerns raised over Lumpongdeng island project; call for balanced development in Meghalaya

Shillong, Apr, 16: The recent controversy surrounding Lumpongdeng Island in Umiam Lake has sparked widespread concern, with issues extending beyond environmental implications to include land use, local participation, and equitable economic growth.

Speaking to media persons, Chief Spokesperson of BJP Meghalaya, Mariahom Kharkrang emphasized that Umiam Lake is not merely a scenic destination but a vital part of Meghalaya’s ecological and cultural identity. Lumpongdeng Island, in particular, has been identified as an environmentally sensitive zone, warranting careful consideration before undertaking any developmental projects.

While acknowledging that tourism development is essential for the state’s progress, Kharkrang cautioned that any project must be preceded by a thorough assessment of its ecological impact. She warned that unchecked environmental damage could have long-term consequences for both the state and its people.

The statement also highlighted concerns over the increasing number of tourism projects being planned on government-owned land. According to Kharkrang, the rapid utilization of such land is alarming, especially when vast tracts of prime land in Meghalaya remain under private ownership.

In this regard, she urged the government to explore partnerships with private landowners for major tourism initiatives. Such collaborations, she noted, would not only help preserve government land for essential infrastructure projects like power generation but also provide financial benefits to local citizens.

Kharkrang further stressed the importance of ensuring local participation in development activities. While welcoming the expertise of construction companies from outside the state, she insisted that a certain percentage of jobs—particularly labor roles—should be reserved for the indigenous population. This, she said, is crucial to ensure that development translates into tangible economic and skill-building opportunities for local communities.

Additionally, the BJP spokesperson pointed out that many local entrepreneurs face challenges due to high registration fees, which often hinder them from pursuing business ventures. She called on the government to reduce such fees for local residents, thereby creating a more level playing field and enabling broader participation in the state’s economic growth.

Reiterating the need for inclusive and sustainable development, Kharkrang urged the government to adopt policies that balance environmental conservation with economic advancement, ensuring that the benefits of development reach the people of Meghalaya.
