Meghalaya Govt Postpones MTET Examination Amid Census, SIR Duty Concerns

Shillong, May 16: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday announced the postponement of the Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET), which was earlier scheduled to be held on May 29, following appeals from teachers engaged in Census and Special Intensive Revision (SIR) duties.

Speaking at a public programme in Damas, the Chief Minister said several teachers had approached him expressing difficulties in preparing for the examination due to multiple responsibilities.

“The teachers are worried and in a dilemma, given their multiple concurrent assignments,” Sangma said.

“Considering their concerns, I would like to inform that the MTET examination stands postponed. Teachers need not worry. We will evaluate the overall situation and reschedule a proper, suitable date to ensure they have adequate preparation time,” he added.

The Chief Minister also spoke on the broader state of the education sector in Meghalaya and acknowledged the efforts of teachers despite various systemic challenges.

He said the government has made significant investments in upgrading school infrastructure and expanding educational institutions across the state over the past few years.

However, Sangma admitted that while the state has improved in terms of the number of schools, quality remains a challenge.

“In terms of quantity, we have enough schools, but we are lagging behind in quality,” he said.

He further stated that improving educational standards would require collective efforts from the government, teachers, parents and other stakeholders.

“Raising the standard will take time, but we are fully committed to ensuring it happens. This transformation cannot rely solely on the government or the teachers. It requires an integrated ecosystem where parents and all stakeholders actively collaborate to uplift our students,” the Chief Minister added.
