State-Level Inter-School Athletics Meet 2026 Begins in Shillong with Grand Opening Ceremony

Shillong, May 20: The State-Level Inter-School Athletics Meet 2026 was officially inaugurated on Wednesday at the Sports Training Centre of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Mawkynroh, NEHU Campus, Shillong. The three-day sporting event will continue till May 22.

Organised by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with the Meghalaya Athletics Association, the meet has brought together athletes from schools across all 12 districts of the state. Nearly 900 athletes and officials are participating in 48 events during the competition.

Delivering the keynote address, John F. Kharshiing, Working President of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, praised the enthusiasm of young athletes and highlighted the transformation of Meghalaya’s sports ecosystem under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla.

He pointed to upgraded sports infrastructure, enhanced cash rewards for national gold medallists, and government job opportunities for National Games medallists as major steps taken by the state government to support athletes.

Kharshiing also emphasized the role of sports in character building and cultural bonding, stating that participation itself is a victory and that determination and courage define a true champion.

Deputy Director of Sports and Youth Affairs Shri P.B. War Nongbri informed that 9,681 athletes from 380 schools had participated in district-level competitions before qualifying for the state-level meet. He described Meghalaya’s preparations for hosting the upcoming 39th National Games as a historic opportunity for the state.

He also highlighted the Meghalaya Outstanding Sports Person Direct Appointment Policy, saying it formally recognises the discipline and hard work of athletes while securing their future prospects.

The opening day featured various track and field events across Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 categories for both boys and girls, including Long Jump, High Jump, Javelin Throw, Shot Put, sprints and relay races.

Several sports officials and dignitaries attended the inaugural programme, including Olympian and High Performance Director of Sportality Mr. Ian Campbell and members of the Meghalaya Athletics Association.
