SHILLONG, MAY 28: Ri-Bhoi Police have arrested the main accused in connection with an alleged attempt to traffic a minor girl under Ri-Bhoi district.
According to a press release issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, Ri-Bhoi District, the incident took place on the evening of May 27, 2026, when a 43-year-old man allegedly took a minor girl to a secluded location where three unidentified persons with two motorcycles were already waiting.
Police said the victim overheard the group discussing plans to put her inside a sack and sell her. Taking advantage of the situation, the girl reportedly managed to escape and ran away screaming for help.
Nearby workers engaged in laying pipes towards the village rescued the girl and safely handed her over to the Rangbah Shnong.
The matter was later reported to Nongpoh Women Police Station, where a case has been registered.
Police informed that the main accused has been arrested, while efforts are currently underway to identify and trace the remaining suspects involved in the case.
