Education Minister Attends First Prof. Barrister Pakem Academic Awards in Jowai

Shillong, June 13: Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui attended the First Prof. Barrister Pakem Academic Awards organised by the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) in Jowai, where he lauded the initiative as a fitting tribute to one of the state’s most distinguished academicians and visionaries.

The programme was attended by former Pro Vice-Chancellor of NEHU Henry Lamin, Jowai Central MDC Andrew Shullai, Dr. Didakamiwan Khonglah, daughter of the late Prof. Barrister Pakem, along with parents, award recipients, and members of the public.

The event began with a welcome address by the Assistant Secretary of the JSU, followed by a presentation on the life and contributions of the late Prof. Barrister Pakem, highlighting his role in shaping Meghalaya’s educational, political, and intellectual landscape.

Addressing the gathering, Rymbui congratulated the JSU for instituting the award in honour of Prof. Pakem, stating that his contributions to education, literature, and society continue to inspire generations of students across Meghalaya.

The Minister emphasised that education remains the most powerful tool for empowerment and social transformation. He encouraged students to pursue academic excellence with dedication, perseverance, and integrity, while stressing that true success is measured not only by academic achievements but also by character, leadership, and service to society.

Highlighting the importance of recognising merit, he said awards such as these motivate young people to strive for excellence and help foster a culture of healthy competition and lifelong learning. He urged students to make full use of available opportunities and contribute to the progress of the state.

Rymbui also reiterated the State Government’s commitment to strengthening the education sector through improved infrastructure, enhanced learning opportunities, skill development initiatives, and policies aimed at ensuring quality education for all.

The Minister acknowledged the role of parents and teachers in guiding students towards success, noting that academic achievements are the result of collective efforts by students, families, educators, and institutions.

The programme also featured a musical performance by the Elev Tribe Choir, which was well received by the audience.

The event concluded with the presentation of awards to students in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements, marking a significant milestone in celebrating educational excellence while preserving the legacy of the late Prof. Barrister Pakem.
