Shillong, July 6: The Meghalaya Government has completed the renovation of 1,391 Government Lower Primary (LP) schools under its flagship Mission Education programme, marking one of the largest school infrastructure drives in the state’s history. The initiative aims to improve learning environments through large-scale renovation, upgradation and construction of government schools across all 12 districts.
According to an official release issued by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), 1,607 Government LP schools have been taken up for repair and renovation, with work completed in over 86 per cent of the schools. Renovation work is currently underway in the remaining 216 schools.
The government has committed nearly ₹1,000 crore towards the development, renovation and construction of government schools under Mission Education, which covers lower primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary institutions. The release stated that education continues to receive the highest departmental allocation in the State Budget, reflecting the government’s priority for the sector.
The programme is being implemented in phases. Under Phase I, 198 new and upgraded LP and UP school buildingswere completed. Phase II saw the completion of 93 out of 100 new LP school buildings, while Phase III includes the renovation of 1,607 LP schools, of which 1,391 have been completed, along with 117 new LP school buildings, 62 of which are already complete. Phase IV covers 186 new LP and secondary school buildings, which are currently under the tendering process. Overall, 2,208 LP and UP school infrastructure works have been taken up under the mission.
The renovation works include repairs to roofs, walls, flooring, doors and windows, while newly constructed and upgraded schools are being equipped with additional classrooms, furniture, libraries and improved sanitation facilities. Upper primary schools have also benefited from the initiative, including institutions such as Government UPS Mowkaiaw in West Jaintia Hills and Nogorpara Government UPS in South West Garo Hills.
The government said progress under Mission Education is being documented through geo-tagged and time-stamped photographs to ensure transparency and accurate monitoring. It also noted that isolated photographs of schools yet to be renovated do not reflect the overall progress of the statewide programme.
With Meghalaya having nearly 15,000 elementary schools, the government said the transformation is being carried out in a planned, phased manner rather than all at once. It reiterated that Mission Education remains focused on improving educational infrastructure and creating better learning environments for students across the state.
