MeECL’s Financial Health Improves as Payments and Dues Are Cleared Regularly: CM

Shillong, July 16: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday said the financial position of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has improved considerably, with loan repayments, salaries, pensions and payments to power agencies now being cleared regularly.

Speaking after chairing a review meeting of the Power Department, Sangma said revenue collection has also increased sharply, contributing to greater financial stability within the corporation. “I am happy to see that financial stability in MeECL has improved to a large extent. Loan, interest, salaries, pension and payments to agencies are being cleared regularly, and collection has improved drastically,” the Chief Minister said.

He added that clearing the corporation’s past liabilities over the next five to six years would place MeECL on a much stronger financial footing and benefit Meghalaya’s power sector in the long term.

The Chief Minister said the government has also approved further discussions on plans to augment electricity generation, including the proposed Leshka Stage-II project and other initiatives. “We have given the green signal to take discussions forward on how to augment power production, especially in projects that are already commissioned,” Sangma said.

The review also focused on improving operational efficiency and managing electricity demand. Sangma said reducing power wastage and strengthening system efficiency would significantly support the department. The Power Department will now prepare detailed action points based on the review, while the state government will regularly monitor their implementation and progress.
