Shillong, August 11 : The State Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), Meghalaya, seized a total of 32.64 grams of heroin, estimated to be worth around ₹5 lakh in the illicit market, during two intelligence-based operations conducted in the Umiam area on August 10.
According to the ANTF, checkpoints were set up at strategic locations in Umiam following credible information about suspected drug traffickers travelling towards Shillong.
In the first operation, a vehicle bearing registration number AS-01-AV-1166 was intercepted at Lad Umiam. The occupant, identified as Allan Marwein of Mawlai Nongkwar, Block-13, Shillong, was searched in the presence of independent witnesses after completing the prescribed legal formalities.
During the search, ANTF personnel recovered one soap case containing suspected heroin from the vehicle. The substance subsequently tested positive for heroin and weighed 10.93 grams.
Later in the night, acting on another intelligence input, ANTF personnel intercepted a Scooty bearing registration number ML-05-AB-9546 after it allegedly attempted to evade the checkpoint at Umiam.
The rider, identified as Jaziel Nongjop Syiem, was detained and searched in accordance with legal procedures. Two soap cases containing suspected heroin were allegedly found concealed inside his jacket. The substance tested positive for heroin and had a total net weight of 21.71 grams.
The ANTF said the contraband recovered in both operations was seized after complying with mandatory legal procedures under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, while both accused persons were arrested for further legal action.
The State ANTF said the operations form part of its continuing efforts to disrupt the supply of narcotic drugs and dismantle organised drug-trafficking networks operating in and through Meghalaya.
The force reiterated that sustained enforcement against narcotics remains part of the Meghalaya Police’s broader strategy to curb drug trafficking and protect the youth of the state.
