KSU Assistant Organising Secretary Jeremiah Pohthmi arrested

Shillong, August 24: Police have arrested Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Central Executive Committee Assistant Organising Secretary Jeremiah Pohthmi from his residence at Nongmensong, Shillong, in connection with the violence and vandalism during the KSU’s black flag rally in Shillong on August 19, 2026.

Pohthmi was arrested around midnight on Sunday as part of the investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the state government to identify those allegedly involved in damaging government vehicles and vehicles bearing Assam registration numbers, as well as assaulting pedestrians during the rally.

On Monday evening, East Khasi Hills police produced Pohthmi before a court. The court subsequently granted police three days’ custody to enable them to conduct further interrogation.

With his arrest, police have so far arrested four KSU leaders in connection with the incident.

Earlier, KSU President Raymond Kharjana, Vice President Pynkmenlang Sanmiet and General Secretary Reuben Najiar were arrested on the evening of August 19, shortly after the conclusion of the black flag rally in Shillong.
