Shillong, September 19: As many as 127 newly recruited candidates received appointment letters at the 20th Rozgar Mela held at the State Convention Centre in Shillong on Saturday.
Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita attended the Shillong programme, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the recruits through videoconferencing.
The nationwide event was organised at 45 locations, with more than 51,000 appointment letters distributed for various government posts. The latest distribution has taken the total number of beneficiaries under the Rozgar Mela initiative to around 12.75 lakh.
The candidates who received appointment letters in Shillong will join departments and organisations including the Income Tax Department, Indian Railways and India Post.
Congratulating the recruits and their families, Margherita said the appointment letters marked not only the beginning of their careers but also a journey of public service, responsibility and nation-building.
Highlighting the Northeast’s potential, he said improved connectivity and infrastructure were creating opportunities for young people to study, work, innovate and build their futures within the region. He added that the Northeast’s development was integral to the country’s overall progress.
Addressing the programme, Modi urged the recruits to contribute towards the goal of a developed India by 2047 and to place citizens and their aspirations at the centre of their work.
He called on the new employees to follow the principle of “Nagarik Devo Bhava” and discharge their responsibilities with dedication, sensitivity, efficiency and honesty.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the growth of employment and entrepreneurship, particularly in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, and the increasing participation of women and young people in the startup ecosystem.
Referring to reforms in government recruitment, Modi said examinations were being made more transparent and accessible through measures such as regional-language options and the choice of examination centres.
He also said more than 1.72 crore users had registered under Mission Karmayogi for continuous learning and capacity-building.
The programme was organised by the Office of the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Shillong. Senior Income Tax officials, representatives of various departments and newly appointed candidates attended the event.
