Shillong, September 19: A life size statue of Pa’iem Tirot Sing, the former Syiem of Hima Nongkhlaw and a prominent Khasi freedom fighter, has been erected at New Kench’s Trace in Laban, with South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai taking the initiative to establish the monument. The statue was conceived as a means of preserving the memory of Tirot Sing and ensuring that future generations learn about his role in resisting British rule in India and the Khasi Hills.
Although Laban is a diverse locality inhabited by people from different communities, the initiative seeks to highlight the historical contribution of Tirot Sing, a Khasi leader who fought against the British during the Anglo-Khasi War. The statue was formally unveiled by South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai, who attended the programme as the chief guest.
The Syiem of Hima Nongkhlaw, Pa’iem Phrester Manik Syiemlieh, was also present at the unveiling, along with Lumshat Sngi, Kench’s Trace Rangbah Shnong Wanbok S. Lyngdoh, Raid Laban Dorbar President Iostar Sun, Laban Parish Priest Rev. Richard M. Majaw and local residents. The unveiling marks an effort to preserve the legacy of Tirot Sing and keep his contribution to Khasi history alive for future generations.
