Khliehriat, April 30 : Meghalaya Police have arrested one accused person in connection with a major ATM theft case in East Jaintia Hills, marking a significant breakthrough in the investigation.
According to a press release issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills District, the incident occurred on April 14, 2026, when unknown miscreants forcibly broke open an HDFC ATM at Wapung using a gas cutter and fled with ₹9,57,900.
An FIR was registered at Khliehriat Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and investigation was launched.
Police have now apprehended one accused identified as Irshad @ Rumi (32), a resident of Mewat, Haryana, from Tauru on April 26, 2026 with the assistance of Haryana Police. Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused is part of a criminal gang from Mewat involved in multiple ATM theft cases across Meghalaya, including East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, East Jaintia Hills, and North Garo Hills.
Officials further informed that other members of the gang have also been identified, with some already arrested in connection with a separate case registered at Umiam Police Station.
Police said further investigation is underway to trace remaining accused and uncover the full extent of the gang’s operations.
