Shillong, June 21: The East Khasi Hills District Administration has ordered the closure of the Shillong–Dawki Road beyond Laitlyngkot village following a major landslide that has completely cut off the road at Chainage 25+200.
According to an order issued by Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal, IAS, the landslide has rendered the road unsafe for both public and vehicular movement. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has informed the administration that repair and restoration work will take several days to complete.
In view of public safety and to prevent any untoward incidents, the administration has directed that the road from Laitlyngkot village onwards will remain closed with immediate effect until further notice. Tourists and other commuters have been advised not to travel along the Shillong–Dawki route during this period.
The administration has suggested two alternative routes for travellers:
- Shillong–Sohra–Sohbar–Dawki
- Shillong–Jowai–Amlarem–Dawki
Commuters have been urged to follow diversion routes and directions issued by police, traffic personnel and NHIDCL officials, plan their journeys in advance, allow additional travel time, and cooperate with authorities to ensure smooth traffic management and public safety. Emergency assistance can be sought by dialling 112. Residents have also been advised to follow weather alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The district administration expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and assured that efforts are being made to restore the affected road section at the earliest.
