Shillong, May 2: Authorities have warned vehicle owners against using fancy or non-standard number plates, stating that such modifications are a clear violation of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the Central Motor Vehicle Rules.
Officials said number plates are meant for proper identification and must strictly follow prescribed standards in terms of font, size, and format. The use of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) is mandatory for vehicles registered after April 2019.
The advisory prohibits the use of stylised fonts, symbols, stickers, names, or any creative alterations that make registration numbers unreadable.
Authorities have cautioned that violations can attract penalties of up to ₹5,000, adding that enforcement drives are currently being carried out to ensure compliance.
Vehicle owners have been urged to keep their number plates clear, visible, and in accordance with the law to avoid fines and legal action.
Officials reiterated that proper number plates are essential for road safety and law enforcement, and urged the public to drive responsibly and follow traffic regulations.
