CONJUNCTIVITIS SPREAD TO EAST KHASI HILLS

Shillong, August 20 : In view of the increase in the number of Conjunctivitis cases being reported across the district. The District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) of East Khasi Hills District has issued an advisory to prevent the spread of conjunctivitis, a highly contagious eye infection.

The advisory states that conjunctivitis can spread easily from one person to another through direct contact with the eye secretions of an infected person, or indirectly through contaminated objects.

The symptoms of conjunctivitis include redness and swelling of the eyes, watery discharge, pain or gritty sensation in the eyes, itching, difficulty in tolerating light, and eyelids sticking together in the morning.

To prevent the spread of conjunctivitis, the DMHO has advised the following:

DO’s

  1. Practice personal health hygiene by frequently washing your hands with soap.
  2. If you are infected isolate yourself at home and avoid coming into contact with others till the redness of the eyes disappears.
  3. If the symptoms persist for more than 5 days or there is decrease in vision, severe pain, intolerance to light and presence of thick discharge consult a doctor.

DON’TS

  1. Avoid sharing of personal items.
  2. Avoid touching eyes.
  3. Do not use contact lenses
  4. Don’t go to school/colleges/office/work if you are infected until the redness of the eyes subside.
