Shillong, August 25 : The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has accepted the Meghalaya government’s invitation for an official meeting to discuss the five-point charter of demands raised by the union.
According to a communication issued by the Home (Political) Department on Tuesday, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma will hold a meeting with representatives of the KSU on August 26 at 6 PM at the Conference Hall of the Meghalaya Secretariat, Main Building, Shillong. The government said the meeting will discuss the issues and concerns raised by the union and requested KSU representatives to attend.
Following receipt of the communication, the KSU confirmed that it has accepted the government’s invitation for talks on its five demands. The union maintained that while it has agreed to participate in the dialogue, it would intensify its agitation if the talks fail to produce a satisfactory outcome on its demands.
Earlier in the day, former leaders of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), accompanied by KSU Central Executive Committee Assistant General Secretary Pynshaiborlang Rani, on Tuesday visited Shillong District Jail after learning that three senior leaders of the organisation had been brought to Shillong from Tura and Williamnagar.
The former KSU leaders who visited the three detained CEC leaders were former president Lambokstarwell Marngar, former general secretary Donald V. Thabah and Biangbor Paliar.
Speaking to the media, Marngar said they decided to visit Shillong District Jail after receiving information on Tuesday morning that KSU President Raymond Kharjana, Vice President Pynkmenlang Sanmiet and General Secretary Reuben A. Najiar had been brought to Shillong from Wiliamnagar and Tura.
Former KSU general secretary Donald V. Thabah said the three detained leaders had hand over to the CEC members to take a decision regarding the State Government’s invitation for talks on the five-point charter of demands submitted by the KSU. Thabah also said that the three KSU leaders were in good health while in detention.
