Shillong, July 1: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Shillong Mihngi Circle has handed over a group of suspected undocumented migrants to the police after finding them sleeping along the roadside at 4th Furlong on the night of June 30.
In a statement issued to the media along with video footage of the operation, the KSU said it acted after receiving information about several individuals spending the night along the roadside in the area.
According to the organisation, the individuals claimed during questioning that they had come to Meghalaya in search of daily wage work. However, the KSU alleged that they were unable to produce any documents to establish their Indian citizenship when asked to do so.
The organisation subsequently escorted the individuals and handed them over to the police for further verification and necessary legal action.
The KSU also issued a stern warning to alleged middlemen involved in facilitating the illegal entry of migrants into the state, stating that such activities would not be tolerated.
The organisation further said it would continue conducting similar inspection drives from time to time as part of its efforts to detect and prevent the alleged illegal entry of migrants into Meghalaya.
