Shillong, June 12: A labourer lost his life after being trapped under debris following a soil collapse at a construction site in Mawdiangdiang, East Khasi Hills district, on Friday. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Meghalaya, carried out a rescue and recovery operation after receiving information about the incident from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), East Khasi Hills.
According to an official press release, an SDRF team led by Inspector T. Tynsong was immediately dispatched to the site and reached the location at 2:42 pm.
Preliminary findings revealed that labourers were engaged in excavation work for the foundation of a building when a large mass of filled soil from the upper portion of the site suddenly collapsed into the excavation pit. One labourer was trapped beneath the debris during the incident.
The SDRF team launched an intensive rescue operation and, after nearly an hour of effort, located and retrieved the victim from under the collapsed soil at around 4:10 pm. However, the labourer was found dead.
The body was subsequently handed over to the concerned authorities and ambulance personnel in the presence of officials from the Mawdiangdiang Police Outpost, the Headman of Mawdiangdiang, the owner of the construction site, and co-workers of the deceased.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of the SDRF as part of its emergency response efforts. Further details regarding the identity of the deceased and the circumstances leading to the collapse are awaited.
