Shillong, May 19 : A 54-year-old man was found dead inside a tea shop at Permadan bus stand in Eastern West Khasi Hills district on Tuesday morning, with family members and locals suspecting foul play. The deceased has been identified as Tailin Lyngdoh Nonglait, a resident of Permadan village.
According to the owner of the tea shop, the deceased was her uncle and was responsible for opening and closing the shop every day. She said that on Sunday night, Tailin had left the shop along with her husband around 9:30 pm, but later returned alone after reportedly forgetting his mobile phone inside the shop.
However, since he was not staying in the same house as the shop owner, family members were unaware that he had not returned home that night. When his body was discovered the following morning, his mouth had allegedly been tied with cloth, while his neck and legs were also found tied with rope. The husband of the shop owner said he suspects that criminals were involved in the incident.
Family members stated that they could not believe Tailin had taken his own life, claiming that injuries and bruises were visible on his body. They also said items inside the shop were found scattered on the floor, suggesting that a struggle may have taken place before his death.
Locals described Tailin as a peaceful and well-liked person who had no known disputes with anyone in the village. Sordar of Permadan village, W. Sohlang, expressed concern over the incident and urged law enforcement authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to uncover the truth behind the death.
Police from Mairang Police Station shifted the body to Tirot Sing Memorial Civil Hospital, Mairang for post-mortem examination before handing it over to the family for the last rites.
