MEGHALAYA TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL SPORTS DAY WITH WEEK-LONG EVENTS

Shillong, August 22 : The Government of Meghalaya has announced a week-long celebration of National Sports Day from August 22 to 29. The theme of the event is “Sports4Unity”, and it aims to promote the power of sports to bring people together and encourage an active lifestyle.

A variety of events will be held across the state, including football matches, cycling events, walkathons, and basketball tournaments. The government departments will also be participating in the festivities by reporting to work in active wear and organizing cycle/walk to work days.

The marquee events of the celebration will be held on August 26 and 29. On August 26, a “Run for Fitness” event will be held in Shillong. The 5 km race will begin at Polo Grounds and is open to participants of all ages. Interested runners can register through the Office of the District Sports Officer, East Khasi Hills.

On August 29, a short event will be held to distribute cash awards to eligible applicants. This will be followed by a cultural event and an exhibition match between the state’s officers and MLAs. The match will be held at the MFA Ground, part of the J.N. Stadium Complex.

Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Shakliar Warjri, said, “Sports can bring communities together and help us all strive towards a better world, like few things can. The National Sports Day is a great reminder of this, and I encourage all of Meghalaya, in their own way, to participate in the activities and spread the joy of sport!”
