Shillong, June 9: The Department of Music at Martin Luther Christian University hosted its annual concert, “Ha Jylli Ki Khriang” (Circle of Rhythm), on Tuesday, bringing together a vibrant showcase of musical traditions, contemporary expressions, and student talent.
The concert featured a diverse repertoire ranging from folk and folk-fusion music from Northeast India to Hindustani classical vocal, Rabindra Sangeet, Western music, and experimental compositions. Students performed both original works and cover versions in multiple languages, reflecting the cultural and musical diversity nurtured at the university.
A panel comprising local music educators and experienced musicians evaluated the performances, while the event also provided students with practical exposure to event management, logistics, and audience engagement through the organization of the live programme.
One of the highlights of the evening was a special performance by students of the Mary Rice Center for Special Education, who were guided by MLCU students as part of their experiential learning programme in Music for Wellness. The presentation received an enthusiastic response from the audience.
The programme concluded with a donor’s card lucky draw, where the grand prize—a traditional Khasi stringed instrument, the Duitara, valued at ₹5,000—was awarded to a lucky participant.
Visitors were also treated to an art exhibition displayed at the auditorium entrance by the Centre for Arts, Crafts and Culture, MLCU, which added a visual dimension to the celebration.
The annual concert highlighted the importance of preserving cultural heritage while encouraging young artists to blend traditional influences with contemporary musical styles, transforming classroom learning into a dynamic live performance experience.
