Regional Camp on Food Security Held in Shillong; No Citizen Should Go Hungry, Says State Food Commission Chairman

Shillong, March 9 : A regional camp aimed at strengthening food security awareness and grievance redressal mechanisms was organised in Shillong on Monday by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner (Supply), East Khasi Hills District, in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Food Commission.

The programme was attended by Chairman of the Meghalaya State Food Commission, D. P. Wahlang, IAS (Retd.), who graced the event as the Chief Guest. He was accompanied by Dr. M. Tynkan, Member of the Commission, and I. W. Ingty, IAS (Retd.), Member Secretary, who were present on the dais.

Addressing the gathering, Wahlang emphasised that the Meghalaya State Food Commission plays a crucial role in overseeing the implementation of food security schemes across various departments. These include the Food and Civil Supplies Department, which manages the Public Distribution System (PDS), the Education Department, which supervises the PM-POSHAN scheme, and the Social Welfare Department, responsible for Anganwadi centres.

He stressed that the primary objective of these initiatives is to ensure that every eligible citizen receives adequate food and that no individual in the state suffers from hunger.

During his address, Wahlang also urged citizens to approach the Meghalaya State Food Commission if they face grievances related to food security schemes. He noted that if complaints remain unresolved at the Vigilance Committee, District level, or even within the Directorate of Food and Civil Supplies, the Commission is available to intervene and ensure that no eligible beneficiary is denied access to food.

Officials informed that the regional camp forms part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the implementation of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and to ensure that all beneficiaries receive their rightful entitlements.
