Union Health Minister Nadda Assures Public on HMPV: “No Need to Worry”

New Delhi, January 06 : Union Health Minister JP Nadda has addressed public concerns regarding recent reports of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), particularly in China, assuring that the virus is not new and that India is closely monitoring the situation.

In a video message, Minister Nadda clarified key points about HMPV:

  • Not a New Virus: HMPV was first identified in 2001 and has been circulating globally for many years.
  • Transmission: The virus spreads through the air via respiration and can affect people of all age groups.
  • Seasonal Spread: HMPV infections tend to increase during the winter and early spring months.
  • Vigilant Monitoring: The Health Ministry, the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) are actively monitoring the HMPV situation in China and neighboring countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) is also aware of the situation and will soon share its report.
  • India’s Preparedness: India’s health systems and surveillance networks are vigilant and prepared to respond promptly to any emerging health challenges.

Minister Nadda concluded his message by reassuring the public that there is no cause for undue worry, emphasizing that the situation is being closely monitored.
