Shillong, May 1 : Meghalaya has officially launched its State Campaign for Self-Enumeration under the upcoming Census of India 2027, marking a major step towards the country’s first fully digital Census.
The initiative was inaugurated at Lok Bhavan by Governor C. H. Vijayashankar, who led by example by personally completing his self-enumeration on the official portal.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor highlighted the ease, transparency, and efficiency of the digital process and urged citizens across the state to actively participate. He also expressed confidence in the Directorate of Census Operations, Meghalaya, to carry out the exercise with accuracy and professionalism.
The self-enumeration facility will remain open from May 1 to May 15, 2026, allowing citizens to submit their household details online. These entries will later be verified by enumerators during door-to-door visits.
Officials stated that the initiative is a key component of Census 2027 and reflects the government’s push towards using technology for better governance and data-driven policymaking. Citizens have been encouraged to complete the process within the given timeframe to ensure accurate and comprehensive data collection.
Senior officials present at the launch included Dr. Pooja Pandey, Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya and State Nodal Officer for Census, and Biswajit Pegu, Director of Census Operations, Government of India, along with other officials from the state government and the Directorate of Census Operations.
